My 80yr old mother, who has Alzheimer's, created this beautiful summer flower arrangement. My treatment of the image represents the fragmentation of memory, vitality and linear time with this condition. My mother is happy, loved and cared for by my siblings and myself and in this phase there are times of lucidity, coherence, of conscious connection, laughter, enjoyment and remembering and then times of confusion and vulnerability. Alzheimer's is indeed 'the long goodbye' and I cherish the time afforded me with her as she lives in the 'now'!
I absorbed the basics of life and painting from my father, James Cassidy. In the late 1970's I spent five years working in a Graphic Design studio in Dublin City. The influence of that discipline can be seen in some of my paintings. I enjoy experimenting with various painting styles and mediums also photography and lately, digital art. I was honored to win a master class when I submitted my painting, The Burren, back in the 1990's with the renowned contemporary Irish artist Robert Ballagh. I have been involved in community art and education particularly with under represented communities.
